There is something deeply satisfying about transforming a plain wooden slab into a glossy, glass-like table top that looks like it belongs in a designer showroom. If you have ever scrolled through photos of stunning river tables or high-gloss resin countertops and thought, "Can I actually make this myself?"  the answer is a confident yes.

At MB Enterprises, India's trusted epoxy resin manufacturer since 1987, we have helped thousands of DIY beginners, woodworkers, and artisans create flawless table tops using our MBEPOXY® Table Top Resin. In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to use epoxy resin on a table top step by step so your very first project comes out crystal clear, bubble-free, and professional.

What Is Table Top Epoxy Resin?

Table top epoxy resin is a two-part system made up of a resin (Part A) and a hardener (Part B). When mixed in the correct ratio, the two react chemically and cure into a hard, transparent, high-gloss plastic coating.

MBEPOXY® Table Top Resin is specially formulated to be:

  • Crystal clear with a super high gloss

  • Self-levelling for a smooth, even finish

  • 100% solid with no VOCs (low odour, safer to use)

  • Heat resistant once fully cured

  • Suitable for castings up to 8–10 mm in a single pour

This makes it perfect for dining tables, bar tops, coffee tables, desks, coasters, and even creative art pieces.

What You'll Need Before You Start

Gather everything before mixing. Once the resin is mixed, the clock starts ticking. Here's your checklist:

  • MBEPOXY® Table Top Resin Kit (resin + hardener at 3:1 ratio)

  • Disposable gloves and an apron

  • Two clean measuring/mixing containers

  • A flat stir stick

  • A heat gun or torch (to remove bubbles)

  • Painter's tape (to seal edges and underside)

  • MB Pigments or glitters (optional, for colour)

  • A dust-free, level workspace

Step-by-Step: How to Use Epoxy Resin on a Table Top

Step 1: Prepare Your Surface

Sand your table top lightly and wipe away all dust. Make sure the surface is dry, clean, and level. Tape the underside edges to catch drips and prevent the resin from sticking where you don't want it.

Step 2: Measure Accurately

Wearing gloves, pour Part A (resin) into a clean container. Then add Part B (hardener) to maintain a precise 3:1 ratio. Accurate measuring is the single most important step  getting this wrong is the #1 reason beginners get a sticky, uncured finish.

Pro Tip: Use our Resin Coverage Calculator to figure out exactly how much you need. Always mix a little extra so you can cover the surface in one shot.

Step 3: Mix Thoroughly

Stir slowly in a circular motion for 10–12 minutes until the mixture is completely clear and free of streaks. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container as you go. Then let it sit for 2–5 minutes to release trapped air.

Step 4: Add Colour (Optional)

For a designer look, mix in a small amount of MB Pigment or MB Glitters. A little goes a long way  start with less and build up to your desired shade for those gorgeous opaque or river-table effects.

Step 5: Pour

Pour the mixed resin along the edge of the surface and let it flow naturally. Because MBEPOXY® is self-levelling, it will spread evenly across the table top. Use a stir stick to guide it into corners.

Step 6: Remove Bubbles

Within the first 10 minutes, gently pass a heat gun or torch over the surface (a few inches above). The heat draws trapped air bubbles to the surface and pops them, leaving a glass-clear finish.

Step 7: Wait and Cure

This is where patience pays off. Cover the piece to protect it from dust and let it cure:

Your table will be touch-dry in about 10–12 hours and fully cured within 24 hours.

Note: Cold weather slows curing down, while warmth speeds it up. Aim for a stable room temperature for best results.

Common Beginner Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Wrong mixing ratio → Always stick to 3:1. Don't eyeball it.

  • Under-mixing → Stir the full 10–12 minutes, or you'll get soft spots.

  • Pouring too thick → Stay within the 8–10 mm limit per pour; do multiple layers for deeper casts.

  • Working in a dusty room → Dust ruins the gloss. Cover your piece while it cures.

  • Rushing the cure → Wait the full 24 hours before using the table.
